It's Monday, my and Gayle and Oprah Reflection Day…
So my reflection is this…
As a whole our education system needs a remodel, a do over. Oprah brought the crisis to light with her two shows on “Waiting for Superman” they have stirred the pot and made folks move to action. My children are succeeding and working hard, your children are probably succeeding and working hard too! But as a Nation, our education system is slipping. Two of my other favorite media pals also got in on the action this week, check out Matt and Meredith on the Today show for their Education Nation initiative.
What are WE going to do about the state of Education in America?
The Oprah show spoke about homework and how other countries do homework and then they study…. for hours…. Homework and studying have become one in my house. I know I plan our evening around the task of homework… and am often happy when we have a night free of homework. This idea is WRONG-O-DONGO! I need to encourage “STUDYING” every night, every day, similar to how we encourage our 20 minutes of reading each night. Another thing to add to my “to do “ list but this one will make our country stronger… smarter….
One additional though…. We all know fabulous teachers… and we all know crummy ones too. The show highlighted that student success increased for a lifetime if they experienced 3 positive teachers in a row… that shocked me. But parents, Let’s not forget we are our children’s first teachers… how are we doing in our classrooms at home?
This stuff can keep a girl up at night...

Okay you know I am homeschooling mama. But I am not one that thinks that schools are just plain evil-incarnate. So that being said here's my thoughts.
Schools will continue to fail because 1)we do not do core knowledge steps (this means while other countries teach a b c and then d, we teach b, d, a, and then c) 2)parents are expected to let the school lead their children instead of the parents leading the school 3)a lot of parents look at it as where the kids go so they can go to work.
And the biggest thing is that children do not learn alike. Some are visual, some are auditory and some are mixes. Until they quit labeling children who aren't "cookie cutter" as learning disabled we will continue to lose children to giving up.
Okay that's my thoughts agree or not.
I am a product of public education and I do believe in it. I am hopeful that through parent involvement, accountability, funding (haha) and a critical look things could improve. Those are lofty goals! Over the last few years I have come to learn that not every family is a partner in their child's educational journey. I fear for those children and feel strongly that the disconnect for those kids begins and ends there. Congratulations to you my favorite homeschooling mama reader, for taking action into your own hands. Your commitment to your children and their journey is admirable. (I would fear teaching them math from 4th grade on....)
Ha thanks. And just in case I didn't make it clear, I don't think that just cause I pulled my kids that everyone should. Ecspecially those children who thrive in that setting.
And with rocking parents like my favorite Paperista standing behind them with a ruler and a timer. lol
My children are different than mainstream public. But there very best friends all go to public. Yes they have homeschooling friends but we have yet to find a family like us. Point being dyslexia stinks when no one wants to help till four years down the road.
